Plenary Session: From clock-watching to navel-gazing: Transforming from EMS to MIH – a dual presentation on MIH
Serving the Niagara Region, Ontario, Niagara Emergency Medical Services provides paramedic services to its 12 local municipalities including Niagara Falls. As 911 call volumes for EMS services across the country continue to escalate at unprecedented rates, resource availability and response time reliability for the most critical of patients is being challenged. To ensure future system sustainability and enhanced health and social services for communities, Niagara EMS is embarking on a transformational change from a ‘time-based’ response model to a ‘clinical-based’ system using evidence informed decision making to deliver services in a model embracing the concept of Mobile Integrated Health.
Speaker: Kevin Smith, Chief Niagara EMS
As a provincially integrated EMS system into healthcare, Alberta is improving early access to non-emergent patients through a Mobile Integrated Healthcare (MIH) program. Initially focused on its two largest cities, recent expansion provincially is targeting seniors and vulnerable populations who are often most challenged in navigating the medical system. Applying a “Assess, Treat and Refer” process to MIH, facilitates a network of resource and treatment options to the patient early while strengthening the primary care connection for long-term benefit.
Speaker: Dale Weiss, Executive Director Alberta Health Services
