Dear PCC Members;
I recently spent time at the family cottage on the St. Lawrence River recharging my batteries and hope many of you are doing the same during this great Canadian summer. Finally able to step out of the daily stresses of work, I had an epiphany – it is such a great honour to serve as your President!
I realize that more than 50 days have passed since my election on June 13, 2014 at our AGM in Vancouver, in which I set three priority goals for my term as President:
1. Complete the new by-laws, including the change in governance structure, and see those changes implemented at the 2015 AGM in Niagara Falls,
2. Continue to solidify the PCC financial position and process, and
3. Launch the new Strategic Plan – Part 1 (12 month) goals.
I am pleased to provide the following updates on these three goals:
1. At the AGM in Vancouver, the memberships approved the attached revised by-laws for the PCC.
The new by-laws: https://www.paramedicchiefs.ca/docs/bcs/ParamedicChiefs-ofCanadaBylaws-FinalJune2014.pdf
• Meet all the requirements under the Not-For-Profit Act (changes will come into effect in October 2014),
• Amend our governance to an eleven member Board, with executive positions voted on by all members,
• Institute three-year terms for executive positions, and
• Limit Proxy Votes to three per member.
2. Past Treasurer, Trevor Maslyk has transitioned the books over to our new Treasurer, Michel Chretien. We have also transitioned all bookkeeping to Michel, reducing costs for this service. The Board of Directors will now receive monthly financial documents, which will allow us more effective control the PCC financial obligations and react more quickly to opportunities/change.
3. The new Strategic Plan – Part 1: https://www.paramedicchiefs.ca/docs/bcs/PCC-ShortTermGoals-matrix.pdf
I am excited about the work, lead by Kevin Smith of Niagara EMS, on this direction. Last December, the Board, Sponsors of PCC and stakeholders gathered in Toronto to discuss next steps. Following that meeting the Executive and Board met three times and now look forward to the launch of this document in September at our next Board meeting.
Here’s what I ask of you: we need you, the driving forces within your organizations, to move forward the five goals in the new Strategic Plan. Please read the goals and consider if you have time yourself, or if someone within your organization has time to assist us reaching the targets. The Executive and the Board cannot do this alone; we need your enthusiasm and sweat equity to make this association stronger for its members and the Canadians we serve every day.
Once the Board has met in Halifax in September and we officially launch the first part of our Strategic Plan, we will reach out far and wide for that assistance; please be ready
It was once said: how fleetingly our past has become our present and our present travels toward our future. Let’s drive the present to the future envisioned in our Strategic Plan.
